A shocking revelation made by the Indian government in the Supreme Court has exposed the scale of Indian involvement in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. According to the Centre, around 217 Indian nationals reportedly joined the Russian armed forces during the conflict, and at least 49 Indians have lost their lives so far.
The government informed the Supreme Court that several Indians were allegedly lured into joining the Russian military through fake job offers, high salary promises, and overseas employment scams. Many victims were reportedly told they would work as helpers, security staff, or support workers in Russia, but later found themselves sent directly to war zones in Ukraine.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that continuous diplomatic discussions with Russian authorities have helped secure the release of 139 Indian nationals from military contracts. However, the situation remains serious, as six Indians are officially missing while the status of 23 others is still unknown.
Officials told the court that the Indian Embassy in Moscow is actively coordinating with Russian authorities to trace missing citizens, identify bodies, and arrange repatriation efforts. DNA samples from families of 21 missing individuals have reportedly been collected and shared with Russian officials to help identify victims killed in the conflict.
Reports suggest that recruiters promised Indian citizens huge financial benefits, including signing bonuses of nearly $5,000, monthly salaries up to $2,500, Russian citizenship opportunities, social security benefits, and compensation packages for families in case of death. These promises allegedly attracted financially struggling youth looking for overseas jobs and better income opportunities.
The controversy has also raised concerns about international human trafficking and illegal recruitment networks operating across India. Earlier investigations by Indian agencies reportedly uncovered gangs and agents accused of sending Indian nationals into dangerous conflict zones under false promises of employment.
The Russia-Ukraine war, which has continued for years, has now become one of the deadliest international conflicts in recent history. Apart from Russian and Ukrainian soldiers, several foreign nationals from different countries have reportedly been recruited into military operations.
The Indian government has repeatedly advised citizens not to travel to conflict zones or accept suspicious overseas job offers linked to military services. Authorities are continuing efforts to safely bring back remaining Indians believed to be trapped in the war.
